Introduction of a tension load
Let us now study the behavior of a concrete element subjected to the local introduction of tensile forces. The figure below shows the corresponding strut-and-tie model, which is more complex than that for compression and requires the presence of longitudinal reinforcement (to resist the tensile force) and transverse reinforcement (to distribute the force across the width of the element).
