Introduction of a tension load

Let us now study the behavior of a concrete element subjected to the local introduction of tensile forces. The figure below shows the corresponding strut-and-tie model, which is more complex than that for compression and requires the presence of longitudinal reinforcement (to resist the tensile force) and transverse reinforcement (to distribute the force across the width of the element).

The applet below shows a reinforced concrete tie with three vertical reinforcement bars extending from one end to the other of the element, as well as two transverse bars placed at different heights.
